Keeping Your Granite Counter in Tip Top Shape

A granite countertop is just a marvelous idea to have in your home. The look itself provides a sophisticated, chic, and elegant look that can work for home. What makes this major home accessory in demand among people is the fact that it is hard to put a scratch on and is easy to maintain. A simple wipe can clean up everything on it. Though as time passes by, your granite countertop may become damaged, scratched, or have some cracks after a calamity. Instances like these can be unavoidable but restoring it back to shape is not that impossible.

Maintaining your granite countertop can be very easy if you know what are the “do’s and don’ts”. These things are really easy to remember and some of which may work from your own instinct.

Don’ts in having a granite countertop

• Do not let stains of foods or alcoholic beverages sit for long on a granite countertop surface. Often, these contain harmful acids responsible for making granite dull and prone to damage.

• Do not place hot items in direct contact to the granite surface. This can make the counter top very prone to scratches especially from silver wares and ceramics.

• Do not use cleansers like scrubs or any abrasive material to clean out the granite countertop.

• Do not plan to use an invented mixture of cleanser for the countertop much in the likes of ammonia and bleach. The result is highly toxic.

Now that you know what are the things to avoid when you have a granite countertop, you already have somewhere around 50 percent of idea how to make the countertop last. To complete the whole maintenance procedure, here are the “do’s” in having a granite countertop.

• Use coasters or placemats to protect the surface of the counter top.

• Immediately clean up the surface if there are spills or any stains. Even though it is a granite surface, absorption is still possible leading to unwanted damage.

• Do seek for an experts help in removing scratches present on the granite counter top. Remember, you want remedy and not another problem.

• Cleaning of the granite countertop can be done with soap and cloth. Just remember to dry it up and not leave it wet.

• If you can’t resist your knack for making mixtures for cleaners, mix flour with two tablespoons of dishwashing liquid. If there is a stain on the countertop, you can apply this directly to the stain, cover with plastic wrap and let it sit overnight.

• If unsure if your mixture is just right, go for cleansing agents that can be purchased, suitable for granite countertops.

By simply keeping in mind these things, you’ll be able to maintain and keep your granite countertop in good shape. Never try to make up solutions if you are unsure of it to prevent further problems. Should a major damage occur, it is always best to contact your manufacturer to have you assisted on any concern, and if possible, inquire about other maintenance services they may offer you.
