Five Ways to Get Outside and Turn Your Kids into Adventure Kids

By: Ben Needles

1. Job number one: the kids comfort.
The Boy Scouts have it right-on: Be Prepared. Check out the weather, and make sure your kids are dressed appropriately for where youre going. If theyre warm, dry and comfortable, theyre ready to explore. And make sure youre comfortable, too. And if youre planning a long adventure, stick some easy-to-pack snacks (raisins? wheat crackers?) and a bottle of water in your bag.

2. Job number two: the grown-ups comfort.
Say YES to the MESS! That means that for muddy conditions, put them in rubber rain boots and worn out, comfy pants. Do what you have to do to make sure you wont stress out about them getting dirty, then go for it! Let them really enjoy themselves, when youre done, leave all that stuff outside until youre ready to deal with it. But remember, grown-ups -- make sure youre in the proper gear, too! If youre not dressed for fun, youll stand on the sidelines. And that defeats the purpose, right?

3. Let it flow.
If youre all set to discuss bugs and the kids fixate on a tree or even turn the woods into a Super Power HQ, go with it! Natural curiosity has to find its own way -- be patient, and help them learn as they go.

4. Be generous with the rewards.
Adventure Kid Club kids love to receive POOPs, or Power Of Observation Points.

POOP stands for Power Of Observation Point -- and theyre awarded whenever any Adventure Kid makes an insightful observation, finds an interesting animal or plant, or answers a nature question correctly. Why POOP? Because all children find the word poop to be funny and memorable -- its as simple as that.

To apply a POOP, make a fist in the air and pretending to imprint a stamp on the winning childs jacket while making a ja-jing! sound. My Adventure Kids love the POOP points -- they count em, they collect em, they brag about em -- the process is an all-around winner. So lay on those POOPs, people! See how your Adventure Kids react.

5. Stay in the moment.
Grown-ups, try not to let yourself mentally leave the scene. Its easy to drift off and head back to your to-do list when the kids get busy with something. To keep yourself focused, watch and listen closely. If youre feeling tired, immersing yourself in the kids action can remind you of why youre doing this, and their enthusiasm will give you a nice energy burst.
