Finding Quality Incoming Link Candidates Through Your Competition

By: B.Lynn

Some of the most popular search engines, including Google, see incoming links as "votes of confidence." The more you have, the higher you'll rank on a given search because search engines believe your site to be an authoritive on the subject matter.

So, to improve your rank, you should encourage incoming links. Although good content is the bait that attracts the fish, you can also track down the Web masters of appropriate sites and request a link.

If you are not sure what sites you should approach about aquiring a link, a good place to start would be doing some research to find out who is linking to the leading competition in your industry. Your competition may be sites that appear near or above you on a given search, or just your local (or global) competition. The next question you may have may be "how to" discover this information about who is linking to your competition. Well, this is much easier than you might think, and I recommend everyone in search for good link partners to try this.

Visit any of the following major search engines and enter the following phrase without quotes in the search field. Obviously you will replace "yourcompetition.com" with your actual competitor's domain. (You can also use this technique to find your own link popularity.)

Google: "link:www.yourcompetition.com"

MSN: "link:www.yourcompetition.com"

Yahoo: "link:http://www.yourcompetition.com"

AltaVista: "link:www.yourcompetition.com"

You can also visit LinkPopularity.com to automate these four searches at once.

Once you have done the leg work to find out who is linking to your competition you can contact them and request they link to your site as well. Not everyone will be willing to do so, but it never hurts to ask.

Manually requesting incoming links is just one good way to create quality 1 way links to your site. There are many other tactics used for creating incoming links to your site, but this is one of the better ways for generating high quality links to your site.
