Whatever the situation, you want to find someone who is struggling or who has struggled with smoking so that he or she knows what you're going through and can give you moral support.

Now, onto the various products available to help you stop smoking. There are many ways out there to quit smoking. Some advise that you quit cold turkey, where you have your last smoke and then simply tough it out without any further additional "props" or substances such as a nicotine patch to help ease your cravings.

One very popular and successful way to help you stop smoking is by nicotine replacement. Patches or gum give you small doses of nicotine to help ease physical cravings, so that you're less likely to light up. Nicotine gum has the added advantage of being something whereby you get your nicotine "fix" orally just as you do with a cigarette, so if you tend to miss the oral sensation of puffing on a cigarette, then nicotine gum might be a good replacement for you. If you are someone who would rather put a patch on in the morning and then focus on other things besides a nicotine craving for the rest of the day, then the patches will likely work well for you.

Another way you can get help ease nicotine cravings is to have your doctor prescribe medication. These medications usually are not nicotine replacement medications, but they work on the centers of your brain that need your nicotine "fix." Therefore, antidepressants are often prescribed to help smokers quit.

Finally, using a combination of these techniques also works. It should be noted, however, that you absolutely CANNOT continue smoking in any form if you opt to use a nicotine replacement method such as gum or the nicotine patch. This not only renders useless the idea of the nicotine patch or gum (future still smoking cigarettes), but it also may give your body a nicotine overload that's dangerous.
