A Fitness Professional’s Credo

By: Matt Schoeneberger

To my fellow colleagues, I ask you to read this with hope for the future of our industry.

First and foremost, continue to practice with reason and critical thinking. Require evidence when making decisions regarding the business as well as the techniques we use with our clients. Do not let hearsay or dogma govern our choice of techniques, products or practices. Review the evidence with scrutiny, question the conclusions of the experts, and discover the truth for yourselves. Apply this truth with caution and open-mindedness, realizing that science holds the ability to disprove its previous findings at any moment.

Maintain the integrity of our industry. Do not let the enticement of increased revenue govern the choices we make regarding how our customers will be treated. Do what is best for our clients, whether profitable or not. Our integrity will continually breed profits as people begin to realize that we are operating with their best interests in mind. The goals of profit and integrity are not mutually exclusive. Instead, they are dependent upon each other. Do what is right and we will continue to grow from the generosity we receive in return.

Continue to understand each individual as wholly as possible. Take into consideration their experiences which have led them to be the person they are, with the ideals and habits they possess. Do not become frustrated when these ideals and habits impede the progress they make, as this will only impede their progress more. Instead, strive to understand their perspective in order to educate and motivate them accordingly. This understanding will breed successes in both us and our clients.

Stay focused. Try our hardest not to let the pull of unimportant tasks distract us from what needs to get done. Often we put the most important or crucial tasks aside for something less necessary but more exciting. Let reason govern the decisions regarding our to-do lists. Make sure our activities and behaviors are in line with our personal and the industry’s goals. Make sure we complete these activities to the best of our ability. Know that if we are unsure of whether or not a new product or procedure is worthy of our name, it is not. Stay focused and with time, it will be.

Take pride in the fitness industry. Understand that every sign, every piece of paper, every business card that wears our names and titles represents an industry full of integrity. Our industry will never be perfect, but the continued pursuit of excellence of the industry itself, as well as its professionals and clients is something that should always be regarded as necessary. Know that we are an important part of this, and take pride in that fact.

The fitness industry will grow, undoubtedly. I am sure of this because I know we will continue to do what is right, both in the scientific processes and the relationships of our industry and its clients. Continue to use reason, to maintain our integrity, to understand our clients and ourselves. Maintain focus and always take pride in what we do, and our success will continue indefinitely.
